  • star rating  Fabulous autumnal landscape views & cosy accommodationn - I keep coming back to this amazing place. I think this was my 5th or 6th visit in total and my 3rd stay in Maple Lodge. The kitchen area has... read more been done up since my last visit and is now well organised, though admittedly we did eat out most of the time during our stay. As usual the duvets on the beds were immense making the cabin really cosy. There is so much to see and do in the area and so much to explore.

Autumn is a great time to visit this area. It’s much easier to get around with there been few visitors, even on weekends. The autumn colours were magnificent, though we did have one day of rain. We used the rainy day to do a marvellous trip underground with Go Below in an old slate mine. This was a fabulous journey back intime that involved a bit of hiking through an amazing forest (so green) to get to the entrance of the cave. There was a bit of hiking in the cave following the miners train tracks for a few hundred metres, before a boat crossing a large pool and then onto some scrambling, a zipwire and some abseiling. The tour caters for most if one is in reasonable shape and no climbing experience is necessary. At times we were wading up to our knees in water and climbing up waterfalls in the cave. You are fitted with boots, a harness, helmet and 2 carabiners so that you can secure yourself when necessary. Scare factor was probably 3 on a scale of 1-10. This was a stunning trip on a rainy day. Our guide was passionate and knowledgeable and ensured all had a great time. If anyone wanted to opt out of a route, eg boat ride, zip or abseiling this wasn’t a problem as there were always alternative routes.

A staple on our visits to this region when we are not climbing mountains is to take a leisurely walk along the Fisherman’s path to Beddgelert. This is a great and easy hike round Lyn Dinas, the lake opposite Red Dragon, and over a few hills, then following the wild river to the village. We always have a stop to eat visiting a pub or two before returning via Sygun copper mine (which was closed for the Winter, but is also a jewel for the area). This time we stopped off for a fab lunch at Saracens head. Yum!

Looking forward to coming back again next year. I will be celbrating a milestone birthday so have booked a couple of the cottages. Should be a great visit to celebrate and meet up with old friends and hike or do other adventures during the day. Can’t wait to return

The location is ideal for hiking Yr Wyddfa - the Watkin Path start is just a 10-minute walk away, and we caught the bus back after descending the Miners Track (bus stop also 10 mins away). Only a short drive to Beddgelert for dinner too.

Peaceful site, great amenities - we’d happily stay again! Only suggestion: add some evening lighting or fairy lights around the seating area.
